Harris & ALPHA

Harris, Alpha & Good Sam’s

As part of our commitment to be the Church That Serves, we are including our partners in ministry from Harris Academy and ALPHA in our year-long exploration.

This fall, Harris Academy students will be invited to participate in a racial reconciliation book club, studying the Underground Railroad. Over the course of several weeks, students will learn about enslaved people who escaped in search of freedom, the brave people who helped them on their journey, those who became abolitionists to change oppressive laws, and the ordinary people who resisted the notion of human beings as property. Students will look at race and discuss ways race impacts our world today. In October, students will have the opportunity to join Good Samaritan as we take a day-trip to Cincinnati, visiting the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center and the Holocaust & Humanity Center. Good Samaritan children’s and youth program will mirror the Harris book club, with lessons about the Hebrew slaves and the lives of enslaved African Americans.

In the winter, the ALPHA middle schoolers will join Good Samaritans in reading Watsons Go to Birmingham and experience a first-ever field trip to the Indianapolis Repertory Theater to see a play based on the book.
